First phase of McKenzie County Oil Display has been delivered!

With increased oil activity in the area, western North Dakota has drawn attention from news outlets across the region and nation. It is an exciting time in our community and with more visibility on a national scale comes more curiosity from the public. 

Currently, the Pioneer Museum of McKenzie County features an oil display that is a successful teaching and promotional tool on seismic activity, the geology and the history of the industry, but there are more questions that need to be answered about the future of the industry and what it means to our economy and our region.  

With increased requests for drilling rig tours, the Pioneer Museum is working to raise $60,000 through grants and community donations to fund the addition of a replica of a drilling rig with supplemental educational videos and resources to our existing oil display. I am pleased to share that the community has already contributed over $30,000 to this project. 

This type of addition is so important to our visitors as well as our community, not only because it is unique, but also because it is relevant to the times and booming economy in the area. This display will attract visitors and educational institutions seeking tours. Guests will be given the exclusive opportunity to get up close to a drilling rig in order to better understand what it looks like and how it functions and in turn, it will provide us with the opportunity to educate guests about the industry and natural resource development in the area. This display will also give us the chance to discuss with youth career paths in the industry and region as well the role oil development plays in our everyday lives. 

Vision

To tell the story of McKenzie County’s oil industry by providing the public with a unique learning tool: a to scale replica of a drilling and workover rig that features trucks, tanks and all equipment typically found on a site. Below ground activity and geological characteristics will be illustrated along with a diagram demonstrating how a horizontal well is drilled.
